Celebrating our Concept Learning!

Coronet spent the final week of the term publishing their learning about 'Past, Present and Future' with incredible results.  After learning about a variety of topics and learning how to publish on Comic Life they have all individually produced a page. Their work not only shows some of their new learning but also their skills with publishing. We were blown away by what they achieved in such a short time, imagine what they will be able to do in future - so many possibilities!

We could add many more as they were such a high standard so Mr Bailey is going to create some booklets for each mentor group so you can enjoy them all next term. Happy Holidays!

Adding and Subtracting with 3 dice

Some of the children have been practicing adding and subtracting using 3 dice! This is a great activity to do for the holidays!

Concept wrap up

Mr Bailey and the children have been working hard to finish up our concept work by publishing a book on Comic Life. Each child has designed and published their own page for the book. There has been some great Collaboration, lots of Thinking and several moments of Joy in seeing their work come together.

Reading Developments

Recently, we have had some wonderful developments with our reading programme. The students who are coaching children who need extra support with their reading are bringing such joy and positivity, it's amazing to see. Also, it's great to see so many Coronet students independently visiting the library to select their own books. 👍 Awesome ownership of their learning.

Walk to School House

Last week we walked from school to the house currently being built to help support the building of our new play area. The walk also fitted into our camp preparations and concept study. During our camp we will be going on a walk and teaching the students how to walk safely on public paths is essential. We also used the visit to look at Shotover in the past and to compare it to the present. Importantly, the students ensured the builders were given some biscuits to help keep them on track! 😆

Sumdog - why do we use it?

An essential part of students maths learning is practising their number knowledge such as their basic facts and multiplication facts. The students need to practise these regularly if they are to learn them and many do not practice enough, until now!

Sumdog has been a huge a hit in the habitat and we have now paid for a subscription so we can use their skill and assessment features. We can select particular skills for them to practise and receive reports on their progress and particular needs, which is fantastic. The habitat focus is accuracy as some students were simply playing the game and not thinking about the maths, subsequently the students accuracy has increased.

The mentors are learning about its more advanced features and we will be informing you as we learn more about this fantastic resource! :)

Quiet Zones

To help students make better choices we have created quiet zones where they can work independently and be left alone to complete work or practise basic facts. Having this clarity and scaffolding for the students has already had a positive impact on learning. Many students are independently finding quiet zones and most students are leaving them to finish their work. A great start. 👍

Buddy Reading Reaches New Heights!

The students are learning to coach their buddies with their reading. As you can see in the photos the students are learning to keep their buddy focused and ensure they have the opportunity to decode the words, hear some fluency and answer some questions. It's wonderful to watch the entire habitat of students having such a powerful impact on so many other students learning. 😃

Learning Number Knowledge

Learning basic facts can a bit of drag but in Coronet we are constantly providing a variety of opportunities to practise and apply their knowledge to games. The thumbs up from the students is their ways to say put a link on the blog so we can practice on home! 👍 Here is the link.

Exploring Publishing Tools

We have to publish what we have learnt this term and Coronet are learning how to use Comic Life on MacBooks and iPads. It is extremely versatile and quite easy to use. The students are certainly having fun playing round with it! 😆

Exploring Past and Present Themes for Concept

The Coronet students have to create and publish a page of information about the past, present and future. They are inquiring into a wide range of topics such as homes, toys, tourism, Scientists, Coronet Peak and many more. They will soon have to decide on one and begin to create their page. 😅

3D Printing

Miss Emma has been upskilling students with designing and printing in 3D, how cool are those name tags! Miss Emma will begin to work with Mentors and students so we will all learn how to use it. Can't wait, so many possibilities!

Coronet Garden

Miss Taylor and Coronet have been working hard on clearing out the garden and designing a new one. It looks awesome, great job team! 👍
